Interested in starting a compost bin this summer? Or maybe getting started with a rain barrel to collect precious rain water? If so, stop by at Orbis Canada’s one-day sales event this Saturday, June 21 from 8 am – 2 pm in the parking lot of the Northgate Mall (Albert St entrance). They will have a truck-load of compost bins and rain barrels for sale at significantly discounted prices. The Earth Machine brand compost bins will be on sale for $45 (retail value $100) and the SYSTERN brand rain barrels will be on sale for $65 (retail value $120).
According to Orbis Canada, if 1,000 households in our community actively compost, we could divert 600,000 lbs of organic waste from going into our landfill each year. Additionally, one inch of rain falling on a 1,000 square foot roof harvests up to 600 gallons of rainwater for use on your lawns and gardens without turning on the tap. Imagine if even 10% of Regina’s single-family households (approx. 6,300 households) composted and used a rain water catchment system. Regina residents would divert almost 2,000 tonnes of organic waste from the landfill and collect 3.8 million gallons of rain water each year! And that’s only 10% of Regina’s single-family households… image what we could do if more people participated and if we could get condos, apartments, restaurants, grocery stores, schools, etc. to participate! .
This one day event will run rain or shine, so stop by and pick up a bin or barrel before they run out! I’ll be on site all day, so hopefully I will see you there!
